There are 2,722 miles from the top of Mill Mountain in Roanoke, VA to
Inspiration Point above Emerald Bay in South Lake Tahoe, CA. It would take 878 hours to walk it (that’s more than 36 days) nonstop, 40 hours to drive it, or 10 hours to fly it. Today, my 2,722 journey begins.
The first stop on my journey is a 10K race in Roanoke on April 22nd. The Anthem Star 10K climbs from downtown Roanoke, up the back side of Mill Mountain, down the front side, and back into town, ending in Elmwood Park. This run goes up a 1780 foot mountain over the 6.2 miles. It won't be easy. I've been told it's impossible for me. Guess that means I have to try.
The final stage of the journey will be a half-marathon in South Lake Tahoe on October 15th. The Emerald Bay Half-marathon starts at Inspiration Point, high above Lake Tahoe's Emerald Bay, rolls up and down the mountain to the bike path, down through Tallac and Pope Beach, winds through Tahoe Keys, the meadows and back path of town, into Stateline, NV and ends at Lakeside Beach, just below the casinos. This will be my first half-marathon in 4 1/2 years, my first since surgery, and my most difficult feat. Medically, I've been told not to try it. Emotionally, I'm still not convinced I can. We will have to just watch and see how this journey unfolds. No matter what, I will be standing on Inspiration Point on the morning of October 15th, the finish line of the journey for me, but the starting line for the next chapter in life.
Lace up your sneakers and let's get this party started!
