We had a long wait from the time we woke up until we finally left for the airport at 11:40, but we finally arrived at the airport and quickly unloaded bags from the car and said goodbye to Don and the girls. We were finally on our way!!
Well... kind of. First we had to get our bags searched by security because they detected a bomb. The culprit? Fudge. Seriously. Note to self - next time take a different treat for everyone. I thought the TSA agent was joking when she said, "It's your fudge. It has the same consistency as a bomb." I cracked up. What else could I do? At least with the boys in tow I didn't have to go through the body scan and just went quickly through a metal detector, grabbed our stuff, finally got our fudge back and then headed to our gate with no further issues.
We got to the gate and realized we'd left the boys' EpiPens at home. Quick conversation with the gate attendant and they had the crew cleaning the boys' seats and trays before boarding. I was told to ask for the same courtesy at each stop. An eternity later they finally boarded everyone on our plane. We were off!
Before we knew it, we'd arrived in Dallas and had our first team reunion of the weekend as we met up with Amanda. We had a nice, relaxing dinner at the TGI Friday's in the airport and the prepared to board our next flight - this time we were finally going to Reno.
We arrived in Reno. It was a bumpy descent, a really hot flight, and I was feeling a little motion sickness, but otherwise it was a pretty uneventful trip. We made our way off the plane and Amanda headed to baggage claim with the boys, while I headed to the car rental counter to get our ride for the weekend. We all finished at the same time and headed for the car. They were out of the SUV we were supposed to have so they upgraded us. We had some sort of Kia. It worked just fine for our needs.
We quickly found our way out of the airport area and onto the freeway towards Tahoe. The time zone difference immediately caught up to the boys and they were out cold within seconds. Amanda and I had a quiet ride over the mountain and down into Tahoe. It was late and we were feeling it, but the excitement over finally being in Tahoe was keeping us alert enough.
We finally pulled up to the cabin around 9:30 Tahoe time (12:30 AM our time at home) and woke the boys. We told them to go inside, upstairs, turn right and get in bed. They did just that. We then unloaded the car and carried everyone's luggage to the right rooms.
Then came our first real adventure of our trip. We had no water. We followed the opening instructions for our cabin, but it just was not working. I finally broke down and texted Chad - the cabin owner around 10 PM. When I hadn't heard back by 10:30, I tried calling his wife Kristi. Right to voicemail. But, as I was leaving the message I saw a water tank "key" hanging next to the sliding door. I grabbed it, showed it to Amanda and said, "This is what we need." So we went out, opened the main line and tada... water. But... then the main valve started overflowing in rushing waves. We turned it back off. Tried to figure it out. Finally decided it was too late and we needed sleep more than we needed water. We finally climbed in our beds at 11:30 PM (3:30 AM back home). Ah... sleep...
Until about 3:15 AM (6:15 home). Then, I was wide awake. I just love when I'm on east coast time in California. Really. I get to see every dawn and sunrise. Feel all the super-cold early morning air. Listen to all the sounds of everyone else enjoying their slumber. So, anyways, I decided a shower would be great. Then I remembered the water situation. I went back out, turned it back on, very little this time, hoping it would help. No water gushed so I went back inside, took a shower, got dressed and went back out to check the valve. It was gushing again. Like - major river beside the house. Turned it off. Went inside. Filled Amanda in. Decided we'd go grocery shopping and then try calling Chad and Kristi again. About the time we headed out the door they replied to my text. They were awesome. They gave us some suggestions, and when nothing worked, they said they'd call the water company for us and get it fixed. We headed to the store with the water off. We headed off to Safeway - thank you sponsors who sent gift cards - perfect amount! As we were shopping Kristi called. She was going to send someone to the house and just wanted verbal confirmation that she understood all the text messages and had a good idea what was going on. She said she'd call me back, so we finished up, paid, and headed back to the house. When we arrived Kristi texted again. They told us to turn the water back on, but this time open it all the way, to the point it wouldn't turn on anymore. Duh. It worked. Water on. No gushing. Lesson learned. With a huge thanks to Chad and Kristi we set out to enjoy the day. First up - breakfast. This was our amazing view out the back of the cabin as we ate -
We are off now to go walk and explore in town, maybe do some shopping and eventually find some lunch. More later.
